Kansas City, MO – It's still summer, and way too early to hear the sound of leaves crunching underfoot. But, apple picking season is already underway at orchards around the Kansas City Metro.
Trees are full of apples at the "U-pick" Cider Hill Family Orchard in Kansas City, Kansas. They grow 'em, you pick 'em.
The orchard grows 18 different varieties of apples, though they may be a bit smaller than usual this year.
“We did have that really bad freeze in the spring, so that did influence a little bit of the growth of the apples," says Pamela Sheehan, with Cider Hill Family Orchard.
Sheehan says they’ve been picking apples since July, but now is the time to pick the sweeter ones.
