KANSAS CITY - A child is in a critical condition after a large tree branch fell on them during recess Tuesday afternoon, according to authorities.

Police say four classes of 4th graders were playing outside at Pleasant Hill Elementary School when a large branch fell off a tree at a neighboring home.

That branch fell over a fence onto the playground where the kids were playing, striking one in the head. The nine-year-old was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Four other students were also hit, but had minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

Wind gusts topped 50 miles per hour in the Metro yesterday. Police said the branch was roughly 25 feet long and a foot in circumference.
