KANSAS CITY - The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred late Thursday afternoon in Oaklawn, south of Wichita.
First-responders from the county were dispatched to the injury crash at 47th Street south & Clifton, to the west of Highway K-15.
Witnesses reported a red Dodge Nitro was going south on Clifton when it hit an east-bound Ford Festiva in the intersection; investigators say the Nitro failed to yield the right-of-way to the Festiva, and drove away from the scene after the collision.
The driver of the Festiva, 75-year-old Manolopoulos Panagiotis of Wichita, was ejected from his vehicle, and then struck by his own car after being ejected. He was hospitalized in extremely critical condition, and died about five-and-a-half hours later.
Witnesses provided information to 911 dispatchers, and sheriff's deputies used a Flock camera to read license plates, locating the suspect's vehicle in the Derby Walmart parking lot. The 24-year-old driver was found at her home nearby and arrested. She was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of failing to stop at an injury crash that resulted in great bodily injury.
Investigators learned the woman’s five-year-old child was also in her car at the time of the crash.
The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for formal charges after the investigation is complete.
