KANSAS CITY - A nearly 2-day standoff in south central Kansas ended early Saturday morning after authorities found the suspect dead.
It began after 4 p.m. Thursday when Sedgwick County Sheriff’s officers responded to a domestic violence incident involving a firearm in the 8400 block of S. Minnesota Circle near Haysville.
Authorities say a 79-year-old man threatened to kill his 47-year-old son with a handgun. After being locked out of the home, the man reportedly threatened to shoot through the door to regain entry.
When deputies arrived, they secured the area and safely evacuated all other occupants from the home.
A search warrant for the home was obtained Friday evening and negotiations began around 10:30, with the assistance of the Wichita/Sedgwick County SWAT Team.
Chemical munitions were also introduced into the home to gain compliance. Despite those efforts, attempts at a peaceful resolution were unsuccessful. Shortly after 6 a.m. Saturday, SWAT members entered the home and found the suspect dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Deputies will remain on the scene for several hours as they complete their investigation.
