Kansas City, MO – Grab your skates and hit the ice! The Crown Center Ice Terrace opened for the season this morning with a free skate, allowing access to the ice for a few hours.
In the warmer months, events are held on the platform, like music performances at the Kansas City Irish Fest. But once we get closer to winter, they clear the concrete slab and "chill it down to 10 to 16 degrees", said Anne Deuschle with Crown Center, using eight miles of tubing filled with coolant.
"Once the slab of concrete is chilled, we add three layers of water," said Deuschle.
Deuschle said after the first layers of ice freeze, they have an artist paint designs on it, then they add more water, let that freeze and start the zamboni. The whole process takes about 3 days.
This year, Crown Center is bringing back a season pass for $90.
