KANSAS CITY – An Independence police officer shot and killed a fleeing suspect last night near Interstate 435 and 23rd Street.
Investigators say the suspect was on foot when he fired a weapon at the officer, who returned fire and struck the suspect.
The Eastern Jackson County Police Involved Incident Team says it started around 9:45 p.m. when the officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation. The driver did not stop until he was involved in a collision. That's when he allegedly got out and fled on foot.
The person killed has not yet been identified.
The incident remains under investigation.
