KANSAS CITY – Residents of Jackson County have rejected the proposed extension of a 3/8th-cent sales tax that would help fund a new downtown baseball stadium and maintain and upgrade Arrowhead Stadium.

The "No" vote won by a large margin – approximately 58% to 42%, with 100% of precincts reporting.

Turnout was higher than is typical for a springtime municipal election/vote.

Jackson County Executive Frank White said Tuesday's defeat of Question 1 gives everyone the chance to reset and find a better deal. "It gives us a chance to reset, and the teams take a deep breath and come back to the table," White said.

"We respect the voters of Jackson County and the results of the election today," Royals Chairman and CEO John Sherman said in a statement. "We will take some time to reflect on and process the outcome and find a path forward that works out for the Royals and our fans."

Chiefs president Mark Donovan also spoke at the watch party for the Yes campaign.

"We respect the process and the decision of the Jackson County voters today," Donovan said. "We're disappointed. We feel we put forth the best offer for Jackson County... we're ready to extend the long standing partnership the teams have enjoyed with this county. This is important."

Donovan said the Chiefs will "look to do what is in the best interests of our fans and our organization as we move forward."
