KANSAS CITY – The people of Kansas have spoken, er, voted on a new design for the state's new license plate.

After the governor revealed a design that was roundly subjected to scorn - in part because the color scheme seemed quite similar to Mizzou colors - the state rolled out an online poll asking residents to chose between five different designs.

The winning design got 53% of the roughly 270,000 votes cast in the online poll.

“It’s great to see Kansans’ passion for representing our great state,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “Now, we can move forward on a design that received majority support and get clearer, safer license plates on the streets as soon as possible.”

The winning design has a yellow, white and blue gradient as a background, and features the dome of the statehouse. The shape of the rectangular state is also shown with the little upper right corner cutout.
Part of the state's motto is written on the bottom of the plate in English, rather than Latin - "to the stars".
The license plate numbers are rendered in black.

The design that prompted this competition was also included in the choices before the voters - and again was soundly rejected - gaining only 5% of the online vote, finishing in far last place.
