KANSAS CITY — City manager Brian Platt has been fired in a unanimous vote by the KC City Council. The vote occurred in a special closed door meeting on Thursday morning.

The firing comes just over three weeks after Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas suspended Platt with pay and a week after the council ratified the suspension.

Platt was suspended after a former communications manager for the city was awarded a $900,000 settlement in a lawsuit against the city.

Lucas told KMBC on March 7 that the ruling was a factor in his decision to suspend Platt.

Platt’s suspension follows the approval of a revised contract less than a year ago.

On March 28, 2024, the city council signed off on the updated agreement amid reports that Platt had shown interest in a comparable role in Austin, Texas.

Under the new contract, his salary rose from $265,000 to $308,000 for 2025, placing him at the top of the city’s pay scale.
