Kansas City, MO – Ellen Schenk is hanging up her headphones, pushing away from the anchor desk, and leaving the radio studio. Ellen is retiring after nearly four decades in radio broadcasting - spending nearly three of those as co-host of Kansas City's Morning News on KMBZ Radio.

Monday, January 4, 2021 will be her last broadcast.

"A new year inevitably brings change, and for me it's a big one," said Ellen. "It's been a wonderful ride that's given me the chance to meet so many fascinating people and report on such inspiring stories."

"A heartfelt thanks to my incredible colleagues and listeners, some of whom have been with me from the beginning! May the talented Will Sterrett and his new partner continue to keep Kansas City informed for many years to come."

Ellen's longtime co-host E.J. Becker conducted an exit interview of sorts with Ellen, taking her back, exploring her long career in radio:

Others weighed in on Ellen's departure, including current and former coworkers:

When I think of Ellen Schenk, I think of consistency and her clear, calm voice that listeners have grown to depend on for years. I will miss Ellen's sense of humor, her love of animals and her genuine concern for her coworkers - for Ellen, a reporter failing to pick up a phone call means the recipient must have suffered a heart attack, a stroke or a serious car wreck.
The morning crew never had to worry about anyone forgetting their birthdays. Ellen made sure to pick up a cake, on her own dime, without fail. She even kept track of whether the birthday boy or girl was scheduled to work, so she could provide the cake on their return.
Ellen, I promise I will never stop looking for your missing cake server until that fancy porcelain utensil is back in your hands! Marc Lavoie, KMBZ News Director

Ellen is a pro, and after years at the helm of Kansas City's Morning News she has earned her retirement, and then some. I wish Ellen nothing but years of happiness with Kevin, their beloved pups, and of course, more time for rides with Daisy. It's been a privilege to work with Ellen, and I'm proud to call her a friend. Things won't be the same without her!Brian Lock, KMBZ News Reporter/Anchor
