KANSAS CITY - The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is examining a death that occurred Friday afternoon in Kansas City, Kansas during a warrant arrest.

Just after 3:30 p.m., the Kansas Highway Patrol made a traffic stop on I-70 near the 7th Street exit to serve an arrest warrant for Daijon Estell, 24. During the stop, a trooper gave verbal commands for Estell to exit the vehicle but he did not comply. He produced a handgun and fired one round, resulting in a self-inflicted head wound. Troopers attempted life-saving measures until EMS arrived. At 3:43 p.m., Estell was pronounced dead. No law enforcement officers were injured.

A small child was in the back seat of Estell's vehicle. The child was unharmed and was safely removed from the vehicle. The child was taken by the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department to be reunited with other family members.

When the independent investigation concludes, the case findings will be presented to the Wyandotte County District Attorney.
