KANSAS CITY - Residents in west Wichita will see a major road project get started in the coming years.

The city plans to re-construct a two-mile stretch of W. Maple Street, from 135th to 167th Street. The $2.33 million project will convert the roadway from two-lane to three, with a sidewalk on one side and a multi-use path on the other. The city also proposes to build a roundabout at 151st Street W.

Paul Gunzelman with the city says Maple Street currently has 9500 vehicles per day on the east end and around 6,000 on the west. Future development in the area will increase those numbers to 18000 and 11,500 respectively.

Construction won't begin until 2027.

The other project will pave the 1600 block of South Eisenhower Court, which will cost $280 thousand. It will be paid for by special assessment.
