Kansas City, MO – A Missouri resident infected with a rare "brain-eating" amoeba has died. It's believed they contracted the parasite after swimming in a southwestern Iowa lake.
The Missouri Dept. of Health and Senior Services reports the patient died due to primary amebic meningoencephalitis encephalitis, a rare and usually fatal infection.
Health officials say they believe the parasite was contracted at Lake of Three Fires near Bedford, Iowa, about two hours north of Kansas City.
The name and age of the patient has not been released. Iowa officials closed the Lake on July 7th and it remains closed.
