Lee's Summit, MO – A man remains in a stable condition at a hospital after being shot by Missouri highway patrol troopers outside of the Troop A headquarters in Lee's Summit, according to a statement released Tuesday morning by the MSHP.

The MSHP says around 9:40 Monday night, employees heard gunshots outside the building. When they ran to the door they saw a man with a rifle. He was shot when he didn't comply with troopers's commands, according to a spokesman.

"He wasn't here out of any concern other than he wanted to do some harm," said Sgt. Bill Lowe, MSHP spokesman. "There's nothing that the troopers could have done differently. They did what they had to do in order to make sure they were safe, as well as everybody else in the building."

The man was wounded and taken to a hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, where he remained in a stable condition Tuesday morning. No one else was injured.

Authorities said they are trying to determine why the man was at Troop A and what issue he may have had with highway patrol or law enforcement. The MSHP division of drug and crime control will lead the investigation.
