KANSAS CITY – The first weekend of 2025 saw a major winter storm coat the Kansas City Metro with a slick layer of ice - followed by a major dumping of snow during a Sunday blizzard.
KC officially recorded 11 inches of snow on Sunday, marking the fourth-largest single-day snowfall in the city's history.
It is only the eighth time since 1888 that Kansas City has received at least 10 inches of snow in a single day.
The National Weather Service said Sunday's snowfall total was surpassed only by three other dates:
March 23, 1912, with 16.1 inches;
January 18, 1962, with 11.8 inches;
February 27, 1900, also with 11.8 inches.
The heavy snowfall caused hazardous road conditions and delays in public transportation.
Roads across the region, including main interstates, remain snow-packed with a layer of ice underneath.
A major snow clearing and removal effort is underway across the Metro. KDOT & MODOT snowplows are traversing the freeways, Metro cities are plowing their streets, and smaller plows are crisscrossing neighborhoods and parking lots.
Both KDOT & MODOT advising that people stay home and do not travel.
