KANSAS CITY - A new state law, taking effect this month, ends the use of temporary tags and shifts sales tax collection to car dealerships at the point of sale.
Right now, buyers pay that tax later at the DMV, but revenue officials say delays and expired tags are costing the state tens of millions.
Trish Vincent with the Department of Revenue says the change won’t take effect until a new tax system is in place, likely in 2026 or 2027.
Dealers worry the change could hurt their bottom line, but the state says it will simplify the process.
