KANSAS CITY - A man was shot and killed in the northeast part of Wichita. Police Capt. Aaron Moses says it happened after 6:30 a.m. Thursday at the Police sub-station, west of 21st & Hillside.
It began as an officer was unloading equipment from his patrol car after his shift, and two males approached him. One of them asked the officer about police policy for shooting people who were armed.
Police say at that point, the 19-year-old man produced a handgun, leading to a struggle, and the man pointed the gun at the officer, who was diving for cover.
Two other officers, one of them off-duty, saw the struggle and shot the 19-year-old. The teenager died from his injuries; he has been identified as Nehemia Flemming.
Based on preliminary interviews with Flemming's family, investigators believe this may be a case of suicide by police. The Sedgwick County sheriff's office is now handling this investigation.
