KANSAS CITY – A bridge under construction in a rural corner of the KC Metro collapsed Wednesday afternoon, killing one, and injuring at least three others, according to the Clay County Sheriff's Office.

The new bridge was set to replace a pony truss bridge on Shady Grove Road over Carroll Creek east of Kearney. The bridge was more than 100-years-old and had been closed since 2016. A new span was set to open in early 2023.

The collapse happened around 1:45pm while a crew was pouring concrete to create the new bridge decking. Four crew members were trapped in the collapse, three were able to pull themselves out, another worker died. The three had minor injuries and were take to hospitals, according to Sarah Boyd, spokesperson for the sheriff's department.

The Clay County Highway Department said there were no safety concerns on the project before the collapse, and an engineering contractor was on scene Wednesday inspecting the bridge before the deck was poured.

The Occupational Health and Safety Administration has been called in to investigate.
