Kansas City, MO – Conservation officials are warning about dumping fish into local waters that were bought as pets, after a 9-pound butterfly koi goldfish was caught in a Blue Springs lake, near Kansas City.

The Missouri Department of Conservation says the ornamental fish was caught by Tim Owings and shared a photo of it. The fish, which is not native to Missouri, but likely bought as a someone's pet, can be very harmful, experts warn.

"When pet owners dump ornamental fish like this, it can cause serious issues for native species. Instead of dumping aquarium fish, check with local pet stores who may take them back, or connect with aquarium clubs in your city," the department stated on Facebook.
