KANSAS CITY - Another push to ban flavored tobacco products in Kansas City burns out.

Similar to an ordinance proposed back in 2020, the Kansas City City Council took up the issue of flavored tobacco, nicotine and vapor products once again on Thursday.

Passage of the ordinance would ban the sale of those goods inside the city limits including flavored nicotine products, chewing tobacco, and menthol cigarettes.

It was first scheduled to be discussed on October 10th but was tabled, and yesterday, it was tabled again. The ordinance's sponsor, Mayor Pro Tem Ryana Parks-Shaw, also sponsored the effort back in 2020.

The hope is that the ban would cut down on tobacco use in teenagers, lower-income neighborhoods and communities of color. Parks-Shaw said she would like to explore the issue further in the future but did not specify when.

If the ban is eventually put in place, sales and stamp tax losses for Kansas City are estimated to be between $1 and $6 million.
