Plan to eliminate grocery tax advances in Missouri

Jeff City, MO – A proposal to slash grocery bills is making progress in the Missouri House.

The plan would get rid of Missouri's one percent state tax on groceries. Sponsoring Representative Mary Elizabeth Coleman, "It might not seem like it's a lot of money - 1% - but the average Missouri family spends about 11% of their budget on grocery items."

Coleman says if you make $50,000 a year, that could add up to a savings of more than $500 a year on your grocery bill.

The bill has passed the House Ways and Means committee, and is headed for another committee. Coleman is optimistic it could become law this session.

Across stateline, Kansas is also considering removing its 6.5% tax on groceries.
