KANSAS CITY - Breathing 100 percent oxygen is a therapy offered to help Missouri veterans with some combat related injuries.

A bill in Jefferson City would help veterans get an oxygen therapy paid for.

Missouri State Rep. Chris Brown, out of Clay County in Kansas City, wants to help pay for hyper-baric oxygen therapy for veterans.

"Studies and research will show the pure oxygen is exceedingly beneficial to your body, but in particular, it is good to regenerate tissue that has been damaged and injured," said Brown.

Brown wants to create a fund that would reimburse health care providers for providing hyper-baric oxygen therapy for veterans.

Recently, it's been used to help the brain with things like PTSD, but it's not covered by insurance.

Brown tells Missourinet a constituent, who served in the Air Force, contacted him about this issue.

Brown says other states have expanded their fund to cover first responders.

"We're not inventing the wheel here. Missouri is not the first one to do this," said Brown. "If we get this bill passed, and we get this fund set up, I think we'll be like the 12th or 13th state.

Missourinet reports what this bill would do is set up a fund in the Veterans Commission to reimburse the treatment cost.
