KANSAS CITY – One person was shot to death, and six others wounded, at a large private Halloween party near 50th Street and Elmwood Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas according to police.
Late Tuesday a police spokesperson said they had recovered the getaway vehicle and taken someone into custody.
KCK Police Chief Karl Oakman said some unknown people showed up at an invite-only party at a home in the 1600 block of South 50th Street. Oakman said when they were asked to leave, they did, but then returned and began firing into the house.
He said there were between 70 and 100 people at the party, many who were high-school age.
"This is very unfortunate. This stuff in the community has to stop. There's far too many guns out here. This was a party with high-school-age students. Like I said, everyone has guns now. We need to be smarter than this," Oakman said.
Police said at least two of those wounded were in critical condition.
"It's disturbing. It's unacceptable the number of people who are out here with guns. Regardless of what the situation is, we need to figure out how to manage our anger. Shooting people, taking the lives of people is not the answer. I mean, it's just ridiculous. We have to figure out how to resolve conflict in a peaceful way."
