KANSAS CITY - Listen to your body and use common sense. That's the advice from a Missouri doctor on shoveling all that snow.

With all the snow comes the risk of injury for some when shoveling that snow.

Shoveling is already hard enough, as a local doctor says one of the keys to staying safe with shoveling snow -- is how you dress to do it.

SLU Care general internist Dr. Fred Buckhold at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital says it is critical you make sure you are dressed properly before going out to shovel snow -- to avoid getting too cold or wet.

"When it's cold and windy, you run the risk of cold exposure or getting sick from that," said Buckhold to KMOX News. "I think it's just making sure you are dressing appropriately."

"Make sure you are wearing clothing to avoid you from getting wet because it's the wet and cold that makes people feel it."

Dr. Buckhold says when it comes to shoveling, don't overdue it -- and pay attention to your technique -- bend at the knees and don't twist your back.

"With shoveling the driveway or shoveling the sidewalk, take your time," said Buckhold.
