KANSAS CITY - The future of the Crown Uptown Theatre is in limbo, after receiving only 3 yes votes out of a needed 5, to be placed on Wichita's historical registry.
In February, the city council denied an application by the owner Mike Brown to increase the building's seating capacity. Brown filed for a wrecking permit but the city placed a 6-month pause on it.
He said property owners should have the final say on what they do with their property, not others.
The city says after the pause ends August 4, Brown could demolish the property, and they are powerless to stop it.
He could also resubmit an entirely new plan for the building to the Planning department, keep operations as they are, sell the property, or wait one calendar year to resubmit the plan again to Planning and the city council.
