KANSAS CITY – Three Kansas City, Kansas police officers were shot and wounded while assisting an undercover drug investigation on Wednesday, according to authorities. Their wounds were reported to be non-life threatening and all three are expected to recover.

In addition, three suspects were also wounded in the altercation near North 18th St. and Parallel Parkway.

Kansas City, Kansas Police Chief Karl Oakman says undercover officers were trying to buy fentanyl from the suspects. But the deal fell through, and the gunbattle broke out. The three officers who were shot were in uniform and had arrived to help their undercover colleagues.

Oakman said the fentanyl investigation has been long and "far-reaching." A large amount of drugs were in their possession, reported KMBC 9 News.
