
KANSAS CITY - After 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, 911 emergency dispatchers asked motorists to avoid Valley Center, where flooding was occurring.
After 11:00 a.m., traffic was blocked off at 93rd Street North & Broadway, to the northeast of Valley Center, because of flooding on the roadways.
Emergency crews responded to a submerged vehicle at Emporia & 5th Street, on the northeast side of Valley Center, and another submersion near Highway I-135 & 125th Street North, east of the city of Sedgwick.
There were also water main breaks in Valley Center near Main & Dexter, and in Park City at Highway I-135 & 61st Street North.
A Flash Flood Warning was put into effect until 3:15 p.m., caused by excessive rainfall leading to the flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.
Shortly after 10:00 a.m., trained weather spotters reported heavy rain and thunderstorms, leading to the flooding after up to three inches of rain fell in some areas.
Additional rainfall amounts of 1.5 -to-2 inches were possible in the coming hours throughout south-central Kansas.
Emergency crews also responded to another submerged vehicle in Maize at Highway K-42 & Maize Road, and power lines down in Wichita on W. University, not far from Maple & West.
During the 11:00 a.m. hour, submersions were also reported in SE Wichita at Pawnee & Woodlawn, and at Rock Road & the Kansas Turnpike.
A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was also put into effect for the city of Wichita during the noon hour; there were reports of nickel-sized hail on the east side of town.
