Kansas City, MO - Winter is fast approaching. So what type of winter weather are expecting? The answer remains up in the air.
"What we tell folks is prepare for a severe winter, but hope for the best," said Andy Bailey, a meteorlogist at the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, MO.
While some said those are not encouraging words, Bailey said there is a significant factor at play this year. He says that will determine just how cold we will get and how much snow will fall.
"La Nina jumbles the pattern here. It puts us between warm air to the south and cooler air to the north. What I can tell you is that we will likely have one to two major snow falls this year, because it is winter in the Midwest," said Bailey.
The news comes one week before the winter weather preparedness week in Kansas and Missouri. Bailey said next week is the time to start preparing for whatever winter may bring us.
"Doing things like making sure you car is winter ready, making sure your furnace is working correctly and I even buy a bag of salt early so I have it for my sidewalks," added Bailey.
Bailey said when it comes to snow fall over the past few years, last year we were on average but in the past two years before that we saw more than our average amount.
