
KANSAS CITY - The city of Wichita will apply for a federal grant to make improvements along the Broadway corridor.
That area from 37th Street North to Pawnee has several intersections that rank in the top 10 in the region for vehicular and pedestrian safety concerns.
The city is requesting $20 million in federal funding with a local match of $5 million, to be covered by the city and or state of Kansas.
ADA improvements, upgrades to pedestrian crossings, lighting and traffic signals are just a few of the proposed enhancements.
The city council will sign a letter of support soon, with the grant deadline toward the end of June. The city will learn if they are awarded any federal dollars by the end of the year.
The council also approved a revised budget of $2 million to make improvements to the Wichita Police Department's property and evidence storage facility.
The improvements will bring the facility up to industry standards. Work on elevators, HVAC, and lighting and electrical infrastructure will be completed as well.
The city's 2025 sidewalk program is funded, at a cost of $750,000. Another $2.3 million will extend the city's sewer mains for allow for future development.
