KANSAS CITY - An effort to bring the WNBA to Kansas City has taken another step closer to reality.
Just weeks after the push started to bring an expansion team to town, the ownership group of the KC Current has entered the conversation. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, that group, including Patrick and Brittany Mahomes, are engaged in talks about bringing a team to Kansas City.
Currently, the WNBA is made up of 12 teams. Plans are already in place to bring that to 15 in the coming years with franchises starting up in the San Francisco Bay Area, Toronto, and Portland. They hope to make that 16 by 2028.
The Mahomes already own stakes in the Royals, Current, and Sporting KC.
