KANSAS CITY – Independence Police say they were called to the Oval Spring Apartments off E. 23rd St and 291 Highway on Thursday afternoon, as a woman in crisis was seen holding both her four-month-old girl and a knife.
During the encounter, IPD says the woman refused to hand her baby to someone else and the tense standoff ended when a police officer fired a weapon.
Both the woman and child died. It remains unclear as to exactly how that happened.
An independent investigation team has been called in to lead the probe.
Members of the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office responded to the scene and say until witness interviews and a review of physical evidence, including video from body cameras, are available, they will have no further comment.
The woman and her baby have not yet been officially identified.
