KANSAS CITY, KS – A deputy with the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office was shot and killed Saturday afternoon, according to the department.
Deputy Elijah Ming, 34, along with a KCK police office had gone to a home on S. 30th St around 3:45. A woman had requested help, telling police that a man was threatening her and her friends as she attempted to move out of a home.
The KBI was called in to conduct the investigation into the shooting.
The KBI says, as Ming and the officer approached the front door, Ming was shot. Shots were then exchanged between the officer and the suspect, later identified as Shawn Harris, 38. Harris was wounded in the exchange of gunfire. And as more officers arrived, the KBI says he barricaded himself in the house, prompted a standoff.
Harris came out after two hours and was arrested and taken to a hospital to treat his wounds.
Ming was a 9-year veteran of the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office.
