As we look towards the 2028 presidential race, plenty of names have been suggested for the potential Democratic candidate: California Gov. Gavin Newsom, former Vice President Kamala Harris, and now… Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.)?
Yes, Greene known for being a vocal Republican, even reportedly leveraging the far-right QAnon conspiracy theory to get elected. However, a fellow conservative recently predicted that Greene is gearing up to give up on President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement and go blue.
“How much do you want to bet @mtgreenee is going to try to run for President in 2028 as a Democrat?” said Laura Loomer in a Sunday X post. “She wants to undermine MAGA because Trump refused to endorse her Senate and Gubernatorial runs in Georgia. That’s why all of a sudden she’s shilling for Islamists, calling for less deportations and attacking Trump. I really think she will try to rebrand as a Democrat.”
According to The Daily Beast, the outlet reached out to Greene’s office for comment.
Both Greene and Loomer have taken controversial stances in the past. For example, Audacy reported that Greene said an earthquake and eclipse were “signs that God wants us to repent,” and that she profited from vaccine companies despite her anti-vaccine stance. As for Loomer – who the Daily Beast referred to as an “informal adviser to the president and the “Trump whisperer” – Audacy reported that she has been described as a “conspiracy theorist” and that she was one of the people spreading the debunked rumor last year about immigrants in Ohio eating pets.
Even though both women espouse right-wing rhetoric, they have also run afoul of other conservatives and the MAGA movement and Trump himself. Audacy reported that others close to Trump last fall were concerned about Loomer’s influence. In 2023, we reported about tension between Greene and other MAGA members after she had a spat with Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.).
This March, Audacy reported that Greene was one of Trump’s supporters who was critical of the president’s move to launch airstrikes against the Houthis in Yemen. Just this month, Loomer took to X to demand that Trump not pardon Ghislaine Maxwell, a British socialite now serving a 20-year sentence for her role in helping convicted sex offender and disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein sexually abuse minors. Greene is also one of only four House Republicans who have joined all House Democrats in signing a “discharge petition” to force a vote on releasing all documents related to Epstein.
There are even more signs that point to Greene’s dissatisfaction with her party.
She told the Daily Mail in August that: “I don’t know if the Republican Party is leaving me, or if I’m kind of not relating to the Republican Party as much anymore.” Trump has “reportedly bristled at his once-devoted loyalist going rogue on him,” said The Daily Beast.
Greene criticized Trump’s tariff strategy over the weekend on the Tim Dillion Show podcast, and The Daily Beast also noted that she’s recently broken ranks with her party on the ongoing government shutdown, “ripping GOP leaders for having no plan on expiring health care subsidies.” This week, she shared some positive dialogue with entrepreneur Mark Cuban, who has critiqued both parties and Trump, on X regarding healthcare-related issues.
The Washington Post also quoted Greene this week saying: “There’s a lot of weak Republican men and they’re more afraid of string Republican women.”
During her talk with Dillon, the podcast host called Greene “our next president,” and added “sorry JD Vance,” to the vice president.
According to YouGov polling results released last month, Vance is at the head of the pack of deal potential iGOP candidates who might run for the White House in 2028.
His 44% lead put him far ahead of the ideal candidate in second place, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis at 10%.
On the Democratic side, the split was much closer between the two top candidates, Newsom at 23% and Harris at 19%. Greene was not included in either candidate list.
Overall, polling aggregates from 270 to Win show Newsom and Vance at the head of their respective packs for now. Polymarket betting data also shows Newsom and Vance in the lead. As of Wednesday, that betting data showed Vance in the lead for the 2028 presidential race at 28%, though Newsom was catching up at 23%. Interestingly, Polymarket betting was also predicting a Democratic win in 2028 at 55% compared to 46% for the GOP.
YouGov data published this April indicated that Greene has one of the lowest net favorabilities of politicians among her fellow Americans with a rating lower than -20. Her YouGov profile showed that, while her “fame” was at 76% as of Wednesday, her popularity was at 19% and she was liked by 45% of the public.
When Dillon made the comment about Green being the next president she smiled and mouthed “oh my gosh” but did not offer comment.
Although Loomer seemed convinced that Greene is ready to make a mad dash across the political aisle, at least one Wednesday X post from Greene indicated otherwise.
“As a mother, I will never stay silent while our children are being targeted,” she said. “Democrats are trying to steal their innocence and destroy their future with their radical gender ideology. My Protect Children’s Innocence Act will stop this evil and protect every child in America by criminalizing so-called ‘gender-affirming care’ for minors.”
