Scientists have confirmed that a new technique allowing humans to absorb oxygen through the intestines is safe, following the first successful human trial.

The process, called enteral ventilation, involves delivering an oxygen-rich liquid into the lower intestine, allowing the body to take in oxygen much like the lungs do.

Researchers tested the method on 27 healthy male volunteers and found it was well tolerated, with only mild and short-lived side effects.

While the idea sounds bizarre, scientists say the discovery could lead to new ways to help patients who struggle to breathe due to lung failure or medical emergencies where oxygen is limited.

The study marks the first step in exploring a potential backup system for human respiration.
