Donald Trump has officially been sworn in as the President of the United States for the second time, delivering his first speech to the United States as president in more than four years.
“The golden age of America begins right now,” Trump said in his opening line of his inaugural address.
Earlier on in his address, Trump discussed the July 2024 assassination attempt on his life. The president said that he believes divine intervention resulted in him not being killed by the Pennsylvania gunmen, noting that he is now alive for a reason.
“I was saved by God for a reason,” he said. “I was saved by God to make America great again.”
During the speech, Trump said he wanted to tackle several issues, claiming he wants to be a “peacemaker and a unifier” and to help the US “reclaim its rightful place as the greatest, most powerful, most respected nation on Earth.”
To do this, Trump said that he will start his second term with a series of executive orders that will help him put his agenda in place.
“Today, I will sign a series of historic executive orders. With these actions, we will begin the complete restoration of America and the revolution of common sense,” Trump said. “It’s all about common sense.”
Trump said he also plans on declaring a national emergency at the US southern border to help fight immigration.
During his speech, Trump also slammed his predecessor and successor, former President Joe Biden, saying that the US has failed to deal with domestic issues over the last four years.
“We now have a government that cannot manage a simple crisis at home while at the same time stumble into a continuing catalog of catastrophic events abroad,” Trump said.
He also took a shot at how Biden has handled the southern border and foreign wars.
“We have a government that has given unlimited funding to the defense of foreign borders but refuses to defend American borders or, more importantly, its own people,” Trump said.
Other topics from the president’s speech included the healthcare and education systems. He vowed that both will see change “very quickly.”
“All of this will change starting today, and it will change very quickly,” Trump said. “My recent election is a mandate to completely and totally reverse a horrible betrayal, and all of these many betrayals that have taken place, and to give the people back their faith, their wealth, their democracy and, indeed, their freedom. From this moment on, America’s decline is over.”
