Former Arizona Cardinals defensive back Josh Shaw was reinstated by the league Saturday following an indefinite suspension for violating the NFL’s gambling policy. The former USC standout bet on the second half of three NFL games November 10, 2019 at Caesars Sportsbook in Las Vegas. Shaw had been out with a shoulder injury at the time.
Arizona’s opponent that Sunday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, were among teams included in Shaw’s three-leg parlay. While an investigation found no evidence Shaw had compromised the results of any games or used inside information to inform his wager, the former fourth-round pick was still guilty of violating league policy. Active players and employees of the league are not allowed to bet on the NFL under any circumstances.
Shaw’s betting scandal in 2019 wasn’t his first brush with controversy. During his time at USC, Shaw was found to have lied about jumping out of a second story window to save his drowning nephew in a nearby pool, resulting in injuries to both ankles. It was later revealed he had actually jumped out the window to avoid police after a neighbor had called about an argument between Shaw and his girlfriend.
Over his four-year career, Shaw has compiled 127 tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery across 55 NFL appearances including 14 starts for the Bengals, Chiefs and Buccaneers. The 28-year-old free agent hasn’t appeared in a game since December 16, 2018.
