The future of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is up in the air. Based on what the team has been saying about him, he seems secure with the 49ers. But it’s what they’ve been doing that leads some to believe he’ll be gone before the 2021 season starts. And the betting odds are out on whether or not that will happen.
With speculation swirling about where Garoppolo will play next season, the odds favor the quarterback remaining in San Francisco (-150), with the odds of him not starting for the team in the first game of the 2021 season at +110.
The 49ers clearly moved up in the draft to take a quarterback, but this doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going to trade Garoppolo. Even if they draft Justin Fields or Mac Jones. The team has been saying repeatedly they have interest in keeping Garoppolo. Though the cautiously supportive language they’ve used in talking about him has struck me as hesitant.
In February, John Lynch seemed to insist Garoppolo is their first choice when he said, “I really believe that Jimmy is our guy.” He also said, “we expect Jimmy to be our quarterback,” not something definitive like, “he is our quarterback.” And he didn’t specify which Jimmy (eyeballs emoji). No, but really, they seem to love the guy and want to keep him.
The fact that Cam Newton has not been spectacular for the New England Patriots and Bill Belichick has always been a Garoppolo guy led to speculation he might end up back with the Patriots. Plus, the 49ers' move up to the No. 3 pick in the draft added to that. However, there aren’t that many trade partners left after free agency. And Adam Schefter reported a few weeks ago San Francisco insists Garoppolo is "here to stay."
Will Garoppolo return to the Patriots or go to another team (+110)? Or remain in San Francisco despite what the 49ers do with that No. 3 pick (-150)? I’d say he stays with the 49ers but keep an eye (emoji) on these odds through the draft.
