While roaming the Patriots’ sideline, Bill Belichick’s usual attire is a Bose headset and a hoodie he’s had since the Reagan administration. But Thursday it was time for him to get a haircut with Belichick calling upon linebacker-turned barber Brandon King to do the honors. King, who has missed the past two seasons due to injury, looked like a natural with a razor in his hand, giving his coach a fresh do just in time for next week’s NFL free agency.
The 27-year-old Brooks knows a thing or two about high stakes—he’s appeared in three Super Bowls over the course of his career. Still, I can’t imagine a more nerve-wracking scenario than giving your coach a trim, especially when that coach happens to be an eight-time Super Bowl champion. Luckily, Belichick seemed pleased by King’s work. The haircut was for a good cause too, raising money for “Saving by Shaving,” a charity that funds pediatric cancer research at Boston Children’s Hospital.
The tight-lipped coach was in unusually good spirits Thursday, joking about his receding hairline (“There used to be more to cut off”) and going gray (“That’s from third and long”). Coming off the Patriots’ first losing season since 2000, Belichick will have his work cut out for him this offseason. Fortunately, New England has plenty of cap space ($68.5 million) for retooling.
