You may have heard Roy Williams is retiring after 18 years spent at North Carolina and 33 as a college head coach. Williams’ resume speaks for itself—three national titles, 903 NCAA wins, enshrinement in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Given that impressive body of work, you’d think people would be able to tell the difference between Williams and the former Dallas Cowboys star who shares his name. But, because Twitter subscribes to jungle law, the former safety has received countless messages from UNC fans congratulating him on his retirement.
Being tagged in dozens of tweets meant for someone else surely isn’t how Williams, who retired from the NFL over a decade ago, envisioned his Thursday going. But rather than dunking on those who had him confused for the legendary hoops coach, the former Pro Bowler played along, even changing his Twitter avatar to a crudely photo-shopped image of his face on Williams’ body.
Williams has run into this problem before as he was once teammates with another Roy Williams (a 6’3” wide receiver) on the ’08 Cowboys. Between Isaiah and Isiah Thomas, the two Adam Joneses (one an outfielder, the other a highly controversial NFL cornerback better known as “Pacman”) and both Brandon Marshalls (each former Broncos), the sports landscape is littered with name redundancies, which can lead to amusing mix-ups like Thursday’s Roy Williams fiasco.
