2021 NFL Draft: Predicting landing spots for first-round QBs after Trevor Lawrence

With the Jets’ trade of Sam Darnold on Monday it seems all but a near-certainty that the Jets will be taking the quarterback out of BYU with the second overall pick.

Wilson has seen his stock rise through the last few months, with his arm strength and accuracy – especially on the run – being his biggest selling point. Wilson will be joining a new-look Jets team with Robert Saleh as head coach and Matt LaFleur as offensive coordinator – a far cry from the Adam Gase era as the franchise looks to turn the page with a new big-armed quarterback at the helm.

The 49ers traded up to get the No. 3 pick in the draft, and while they say they have no plans to move on from Jimmy Garoppolo, you don’t make a deal like that unless you plan to take a QB with this pick.

Which QB is the question. Multiple reports suggest that Mac Jones is the 49ers guy. The Heisman Trophy candidate was armed with the best weapons across the country at Alabama — something that has been used as a knock against him.

But Jones is someone who can come in and either compete for the starting job with Garoppolo or wait patiently until his number is called should Garoppolo get hurt or injured during the season.

Washington Football Team has the 19th overall pick in the draft but there are several teams they could trade up with to get inside the top 10. CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli mocks the Football Team trading with the Lions at No. 7 to select Mac Jones.

With Jones off the board, we’re going to say the take Trey Lance at this spot. Ryan Fitzpatrick is not here for the long run and Lance would be ideal to bring in and learn behind a veteran before taking the reins.

Lance only played one game in 2020 because North Dakota State canceled its season due to the pandemic, but there is plenty of reason why Lance remains a top-10 pick — he has a big arm, explosive speed and excellent decision-making.

With the Panthers no longer in need of a quarterback, it is becoming increasingly more and more likely that Justin Fields could fall to the Patriots. ESPN's Todd McShay recently mocked the Patriots trading up to the 11-spot with the Giants to take Fields, and that was before the Darnold trade.

New England may still have to move up from the 15th pick to get the Ohio State QB, but if Fields is indeed the fourth quarterback off the board he could conceivably be the steal of the draft. He's shown his toughness on the biggest stage, throwing for six TDs against Clemson in the Sugar Bowl after taking a nasty shot to the ribs.

The Patriots would not need to turn to Fields right away and can have him learn under Cam Newton, who is back on the team on another a one-year deal. There are some similarities between the two, but Newton has had a lot of wear and tear on his body over the years. Fields brings fresh speed and a big arm that Newton no longer has in his game.
