In honor of Women’s History Month, we're celebrating the power of Women in Country by honoring iconic heritage female artists, showcasing the genre's rising stars, and spotlighting today’s hit female artists. Today RADIO.COM welcomes singer Ingrid Andress!
The three-time 2021 GRAMMYs nominee (tied with Miranda Lambert as the most nominated Country artist) and 2021 ACM nominee for Single and New Female Artist of the Year joins RADIO.COM's Rob & Holly as we continue our celebration of the female side of Country, with a stirring performance of her latest and perfectly fitting hit, "Lady Like." (Watch it above.)
The excitement over the list of accolades Andress has received, and it's a long and impressive one, was still fresh in her mind during our chat just before GRAMMY night. "It hasn't really sunk in yet," she says, "even though I've had a few months to think about it. But I don't think it will ever really sink in. It's insane to me because it still feels super new."
"I always have to wake up and remind myself, 'it's happening now,'" Ingrid says. "'Everything you've worked so hard to do is literally happening now. So let's enjoy this as much as we can.' I feel like that's the advice everybody gives: 'Make sure you enjoy the journey.' I'm like, 'I'M TRYING TO ENJOY THE JOURNEY!' That's really hard to do when you think about it because it's not exactly the most ideal year to be celebrating... it's a mixed bag of emotions for sure."
As different as they may be, the celebrations continue. We've been asking all of our Leading Ladies this month about the singers, songwriters, family members, and regular Jane's who have been outstanding female influences in their careers and personal lives. For Ingrid's songwriting side, "Coal Miner's Daughter" Loretta Lynn and The Chicks were bright and shining voices in her musical upbringing. When it comes to singing, "I've wanted to be Faith Hill for the longest time, and I realized I am not her," she admits. "I was obsessed with her for the longest time, and still am to be honest."
"Her voice is just so friggin' good," Ingrid adds. "She could sing anything and she was never screaming at you. It was just her being a good singer, and her presence on stage was just so commanding. And she's beautiful, she's like human Barbie doll! I mean, who are we joking? She's just flawless!"
Describing herself with just one word, Ingrid would have to go with "unpredictable" at the moment. "I'm finding that the more I talk to people and they ask, 'so how did this all happen?' -- I'm realizing that I do not plan anything out ever and I sort of just improvise. The more I learn about myself, the more I'm like, 'oh wow, yeah. I've literally barely made any plans in my whole life.' So, that's a fun fact!"
If she could give her 16-year-old self a piece of advice (although she admits to needing plenty of advice as an adult), Ingrid thinks she would say, "don't take yourself so seriously, you're still learning things and people don't know why they do the things they do when they're sixteen. You're just trying to figure it out, so don't be so hard on yourself. Most people don't know what they're talking about, so trust your gut." Honest advice for all-ages.
