Born Montero Lamar Hill, the rapper publicly came out during Pride Month 2019. However, it wasn’t supposed to happen that way, if at all. In the letter, Lil Nas X writes, “...I know we promised to never come out publicly. I know we promised to never be 'that' type of gay person. I know we promised to die with the secret, but this will open doors for many other queer people to simply exist…” He continued to express that this is “very scary” for him and even said that some may say he’s “pushing an agenda.” However, he’s reclaiming what that truly means. “But the truth is, I am. The agenda to make people stay the f*** out of other people’s lives and stop dictating who they should be,” he continued.

The enthralling “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” visual has biblical references and nods to Greek mythology. The video begins in a lilac and magenta Garden of Eden with the record-breaking rapper saying, “in life, we hide the parts of ourselves we don’t want the world to see. We lock them away. We tell them no. We banish them, but here we don't. Welcome to Montero.” It also shows Eve making out with the snake, a descent into Hell via a stripper pole, a satanic lap dance and a prisoner being stoned. All characters are portrayed by Lil Nas X.

Fans were in full support of the message.

The open letter has amassed over 250K likes and the video has been viewed over 1.3M times. Check out the full “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” visual below.
