Retired NFL star Roddy White has apologized for comments he made in response to sexual assault allegations against Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.
White, who spent his entire 11-year NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons, recently came under criticism when he questioned an accuser's account while defending Watson in a widely panned social media post.
On Thursday, White sought to make amends for what he said were insensitive remarks.
"I sent out a text that was very insensitive about the Deshaun Watson situation," White said on Twitter. "I apologize for it not having a complete understanding from a women's point of view these things can happen. I have known Deshaun Watson since he was a teenager and I wish the best comes out of this"
The four-time Pro Bowler and 2010 All-Pro wide receiver faced backlash on social media when he said one of the cases against Watson was a "far stretch" because it was "impossible to make someone give u oral sex," as the accuser had alleged in court filings.
Watson is now the defendant in over a dozen civil lawsuits by Jane Does represented by prominent Houston attorney and former mayoral candidate Tony Buzbee. All of the female plaintiffs are masseuses or worked with Watson in similar such capacities, and allege sexual assault or otherwise unwanted sexual touching, or sexual harassment.
Watson's lawyer, Rusty Hardin, said some of the encounters were consensual while others were fabricated. Watson suggested Buzbee had approached him with a six-figure settlement offer in response to the first case, but has been silent since.
White, 39, last played for the Falcons in 2015. The Alabama-Birmingham product finished his regular-season career with 808 receptions and nearly 11,000 receiving yards.
