The Northhampton native tells us that the new album is a chance for people to get to know him better. slowthai adds, “this was a journey of getting to know myself better and maybe not getting too carried away with like a moment rather like a reflection on who I am, especially dealing with my mental health over the last two years.”

The A-side of the new record hits hard and feels rougher around the edges, while the B side of TYRON is “softer” and more “introspective.” The artist says that he felt the oscillation between “hard song” and “soft song” one after another was a format that had been done “a million times.” The “MAZZA” singer shares that he aimed to do his “own little twist on it… and just switch it up.”

The rapper tells us that he had all these songs but it was about finding a way to organize them so that they could all “flow from start to finish.” He continues, “It was kinda like ‘yo I’m explaining two different sides of myself basically…’ I believe we are all a contradiction, we believe one thing and as we grow, we grow out of it and our views and opinions change.” TYRON explores the push and pull that we all feel as we begin to form our own sense of self from the perspective of the UK rapper.

Slowthai reveals that TYRON was meant to be his third album but explains that while dealing with his mental health he felt, “it’s more pressing to deal with this now… and I want people to know that they’re not alone in feeling these things, especially being confined to your own space and having to deal with yourself on the daily.” The rapper adds, “that’s one thing we neglect. We think about how everyone else is around us, but we don’t realize until we’re on our own and we’re with our thoughts and our mind, what we’re actually going through.”

However, slowthai tells us that he wants his next body of work to be shaped around other people rather than his own experiences. His next album will focus on “what I observe in people’s everyday lives,” slowthai shares with us. The artist even speculates that he has about fifty percent of this more retrospective album complete, it’s not just an idea he’s been sitting on.

Slowthai possesses a deep fascination with songwriting and song structure, the rapper aims to “explore that avenue a lot more,” on his next project.

TYRON is available everywhere now.
