Washington reportedly ‘monitoring’ Russell Wilson situation in Seattle

Russell Wilson sounded off on The Dan Patrick Show earlier this week, ruffling feathers by seemingly throwing his Seahawks offensive line under the bus. “It’s gotta’ be fixed,” said Wilson, who also raised eyebrows by telling Patrick he’s “not sure” if he’s available in a trade. “We’ve got to be better up front.” The quarterback’s whirlwind media tour—which also included a visit to The Ellen DeGeneres Show and a sensual GQ photoshoot with his popstar wife, Ciara—has only escalated tensions between Wilson and his employer with the Seahawks none too happy about him taking his beef public.

While it’s still a longshot Seattle would ever trade its golden goose, that won’t stop teams from exploring the possibility of poaching Wilson from the city that’s been his home (well, one of four homes) since 2012. Per CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora (via JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington and 106.7 The Fan), Washington is “monitoring” the situation closely.

Washington won a division title in its first year under coach Ron Rivera (with an assist from Doug Pederson) in spite of relatively weak quarterback play from the trio of Alex Smith (who miraculously started six games two years after nearly having his leg amputated), Kyle Allen and draft bust Dwayne Haskins, the latter now a Pittsburgh Steeler. Adding Wilson, fresh off a career-high 40 touchdown passes in 2020, would further bolster an up-and-coming team that already boasts one of the sport’s top defenses.

Washington’s offensive line had its struggles a year ago—only the Eagles permitted more sacks—and that deficiency would only grow worse if Pro Bowl guard Brandon Scherff departs in free agency. Still, Washington would represent a fresh start for Wilson, who is from the area (he’s a Richmond, Virginia native).

The odds of Wilson being dealt, even factoring in recent events, remain slim. But, as the saying goes, where there’s smoke, there’s fire. And there’s a whole lot of smoke billowing out of the coffee capital right now.
