The Washington Football Team signed 38-year-old journeyman quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to a one-year deal on Monday, but adding Fitzpatrick still does not solve Washington's need for a franchise quarterback.
Just don't expect it to come in the form of a trade with the Jets for Sam Darnold.
ESPN's Dianna Russini tweeted that she reached out to a WFT about the possibility of a trade for Darnold and was told, “don’t waste your time.”
This would infer that the Football Team has no interest in trading for the 23-year-old quarterback.
Darnold has been at the center of trade rumors this offseason, with some more buzz picking up in recent days due to the start of free agency. At least eight teams have contacted the Jets about Darnold, according to SI’s Albert Breer.
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll also reportedly holds a “high opinion” of Darnold.
The Jets reportedly want to watch quarterback prospects Zach Wilson and Justin Fields throw at their Pro Days before making a decision on Darnold, though.
Prior to the Fitzpatrick signing, Washington was considered a potential landing spot for the Jets QB after releasing Dwayne Haskins last season and Alex Smith this offseason.
Instead, Fitzpatrick appears to be the favorite to start the 2021 season in Washington — as of now — with Kyle Allen and Taylor Heinicke as his main competition for the starting job.
