Yankees fans chant 'play real baseball' in extra innings, and social media agrees

Chad Green had a good outing on Wednesday night. He forced a groundout against Ryan Mountcastle in the top of the 10th, forced a groundout from Maikel Franco, forced another grounder from Pedro Severino — though an error allowed him to reach first — and then struck out Rio Ruiz.

But even that type of performance wasn't good enough to prevent the Orioles from scoring a run — an unearned run for Green, but a run nonetheless — in extras. The Yankees scored in the bottom half of the inning, forcing the 11th, where the Orioles were able to score. And when New York got their chance in the bottom of that frame, Baltimore's defense came through. Green got the loss, and that was that.

Needless to say, the fans who looked forward to enjoying some live baseball at Yankee Stadium — likely for the first time in a while — were a little bit disappointed by the result, and the league's relatively new extra innings rule factored into that.

Of course, not everything in the loss had to do with the extra innings rule coming into play. Both teams had the same opportunity — it's not like only Baltimore had a runner on second to start the inning — and the Yankees probably should have won this game.

Just look at the box score. The Yankees had 13 hits. They were 3-14 with runners in scoring position. They left 10 runners on base. The Orioles, on the other hand, recorded just four hits.

Social media seemed to be in agreement with the fans and their chant, for the most part, though there were a few exceptions.
