“Had a big (bird) time singing with my friends on Sesame Street,” the 27-year-old Country artist wrote on Instagram alongside photos or her hugging Big Bird and kissing Elmo on the cheek.
Backed by the vocals of the muppets, Kelsea’s song highlighted several family structures including those with single parents, extended family members as guardians, gay parents, only children, pets and more. The lyrics preached the power of love as she sang, “The one thing every family has, whatever they may be, is a thing that we call love, that’s what makes a family.”
Kelsea joins a healthy list of Country artists who have visited the famed children’s show throughout the years. Other Country stars appearing on the show have been Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Randy Travis, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, The Chicks, Maren Morris and Thomas Rhett.
In addition to teaching kids important lessons like kindness and love for all through songs like Kelsea’s, the show also strives to openly address timely topics including race and equality.
The show recently made headlines as it received praise for welcoming two new puppets to the Sesame Street gang representing people of color. The addition of 5-year-old Wes and his father, Elijah further proved the programs commitment to inclusivity.
"Sesame Workshop has always stood for diversity, inclusion, equity, and kindness,” said Kay Wilson Stallings, EVP of Sesame Workshop Creative/Production. “As a trusted source for families, we have a responsibility to speak out for racial justice and empower families to have conversations about race and identity with their children at a young age.”
