Arizona license plates will be getting a new font, after production resumes following aluminum supply-chain issues.

Arizona DOT explained that the worldwide shortage means that Arizona Correctional Industries did not receive a scheduled delivery of aluminum, and that production has temporarily halted. In the meantime, another vendor has been temporarily tapped to handle production, but the necessary switch is causing a delay.

Arizona Motor Vehicle Division has been considering a new font for some time, but doing so would cause a delay, making now the perfect time to make the switch!

Meanwhile, MVD will continue to process and issue license plate numbers for vehicles, and as long as the proper information has been submitted before the expiration of a vehicle’s temporary permit, it will show in MVD’s system as valid for law enforcement officers. Questions can be addressed by calling MVD at 602-255-0072.

Drivers who ordered plates after May 21st will begin receiving most specialty plates this week, with standard plates beginning to arrive next week.

The aluminum shortage has also caused hiccups for canned beverage makers and the HVAC industry, as well as license plate production in at least two other states.
