ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - It looks like more waiting and frustration for St. Louis Cardinals 24-year-old pitcher Alex Reyes, who left a game in the second inning on Sunday with an apparent injury. General manager Mike Girsch gave KMOX an update on Monday and it sounds like the team will be cautions with their long-time No. 1 prospect.
Reyes left the game with what Girsch called pectoral muscle sorness in the second inning of a start with Triple-A Memphis. He showed some frustration on the mound after throwing a pitch.
Girsch updated KMOX's Mark Reardon on the situation on Monday, during a charity golf outing hosted by Cardinals manager Mike Shildt, the full conversation can be heard in the audio at the top of this page.
"He's going to be shutdown for some period of time, hopefully short," Girsch says regarding Reyes' health.
He says they're still waiting for him to see a team doctor, which will happen Monday evening when the Redbirds return to Memphis, to get a better understanding of what happened.
After a start in late April, Reyes broke the pinkie in his non-throwing hand when he punched a wall in frustration after a poor start.
Reyes made his big league debut in 2016 and missed 2017 while recuperating from Tommy John surgery. He made one appearance for St. Louis last year.
